KidsWalk at ArtWalk San Diego ~ April 28th & 29th in Little Italy

kidswalkArtWalk has been one of my favorite Springtime events since it first started, many years ago. I’ve tried to attend every year, and have always enjoyed walking the streets of Little Italy, looking at assorted art from various artists. Once we had kids, I began taking them to ArtWalk as well.

A few years ago I discovered they had an area called KidsWalk, which is solely devoted to kids activities. KidsWalk is set up at Amici Park on Date Street & Union Streets, next to Walker Elementary. The area is set up with lots of tents from various affiliations, such as museums, art organizations, and local businesses.

Most tents have free art related activities for the kids. ArtReach, a local nonprofit associated with ArtWalk, has one such area. If you stop by KidsWalk at the right time, you might see the Sophia Isadora Academy of Circus Arts performing, which is something our kids always find amazing to watch. One of our favorite KidsWalk activities is to join in with a group of others playing instruments with RhythmWorx.

This year, Birch Aquarium, The New Children’s Museum, & Rare Hare Studio will have crafts to make out of recycled materials, Art with Larisse will have a tent showing basic drawing techniques, and San Diego Seaside Scrollers will offer wood projects, to name a few! Mission Federal Credit Union, ArtWalk’s title sponsor, will also be at KidsWalk, with savings banks for kids to paint.

I’ve found that if you have kids, and head straight to KidsWalk, walking around the remainder of ArtWalk is much more enjoyable. KidsWalk allows them to use some of their energy, and gives them the opportunity to use their own creative outlet. I suggest setting aside an hour to and hour and a half to spend at KidsWalk.

ArtWalk San Diego, including KidsWalk, is from 11am-6pm, April 29th & 30th, 2012. There’s lots to see and do, and the festival is free! Click HERE to go to learn more about KidsWalk. Perhaps we’ll see you there!

KidsWalk at ArtWalk on the Bay ~ Hands-On Family Fun!

kidswalkArtWalk on the Bay, a FREE, yearly art festival in San Diego, is happening from 10am-5pm on September 10th and 11th, 2011. ArtWalk on the Bay is the “little sister” of Mission Federal ArtWalk, which happens in Little Italy each Spring. ArtWalk on the Bay is set at Hilton Bayfront Park, just next to San Diego Bay, and includes a fun area for families, called KidsWalk!

KidsWalk will be located on the grassy area of the event, and includes fun, hands-on art activities for kids. Look for the tall, kinetic sail sculptures, and green pop up canopies. KidsWalk participants include the following:
ArtReach
San Diego Children’s Discovery Museum
Ceramic Fanatics
RhythmWorx
Art With Larisse
San Diego Creative Weaver’s Guild

Aside from KidsWalk, families can enjoy looking at art by 100+ artists displaying their creations, live music, food vendors, and more! There’s a nice breeze at the location, and you can easily push a jogger or stroller around the event. It’s a great area to spend the day!

The Hilton Bayfront Park is located just next to the Hilton San Diego Bayfront, which is just east of the San Diego Convention Center, and just south of Petco Park. The address is for the location is One Park Blvd., San Diego, CA 92101.

Parking is available for a special price of only $2 per day per space at an Ace parking lot, located at the northeast corner of Park Blvd. & Imperial Ave., next to Petco Park. Parking is also available in a structure just next to the lot near Petco Park for $10/day; at the Convention Center for $10/day; and at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront (call for rates).

If you park near Petco Park, you can easily walk along the Harbor Drive Bridge to the event. There’s even an elevator, so you can take a stroller. If you do take the bridge with a stroller, remember that on your way back, you’ll want to take the elevator to the 3rd floor (P3) to reach the bridge. It’s an easy walk, and when we’ve taken it, our kids enjoyed the view from the bridge.

Check the links below for more info about ArtWalk on the Bay. It’s sure to be a fun, family-friendly event! Perhaps we’ll see you there!
