Kids Cooking Classes
We recently attended an Open House at The Center For A Healthy Lifestyle, also known as “The Sunny Yellow Cottage”, which is part of the Boys and Girls Clubs of San Dieguito, in Solana Beach. I took our eight year old daughter, because they were demonstrating their cooking classes for kids. The main instructor was the amazing, Chef Amanda, from the Emmy Award-winning show, (which happens to be filmed on location) The Good Food Factory!
Other instructors that teach there were demonstrating and cooking with the kids as well. They had the kids in attendance make things that they might normally make in an actual class. The teachers were very nice, and patient with the children.
Incredible Establishment For Instruction!
I was very impressed by not only the teachers, but of the establishment in general. The Center has a beautiful garden (where they also offer classes!), and an incredible kitchen for instruction! It’s set in a house which has been renovated for instruction, with a comfortable seating area inside, as well as two very large tables that can be used as part of the classes.
Outside they have a neat covered patio area in the back, as well as a beautiful deck at the front. I joked that I wanted to live there. Truthfully, I really would!
As far as the classes themselves, we learned that they base their teachings around healthy cooking, and using home-grown, natural foods when possible. When we were there the kids made hummus and gluten-free baked donuts. I sampled both items, and they were delicious!
Classes & Camps Offered Throughout The Year!
Kids Cooking Classes and Camps are offered throughout the year at The Center For A Healthy Lifestyle. They try and incorporate their classes around themes, such as “Haunted Holiday Cooking”, and “Holiday Traditions”, and even “Art Gallery Opening”, a combined art and cooking class which ends with a grand opening-type art event! I love that!
Classes are generally fit for ages 5 -12, and an hour and a half each lesson. They also conduct cooking classes for Girl Scouts, to help them earn their badges. You can find more about the classes offered at their website, HERE. Our daughter really loved it, and I think our 6 year old son would love to take a class there too. Perhaps we’ll see you there!
