The “Big Green Bus” Rolls into Birch Aquarium at Scripps!

The “Big Green Bus”, a Greyhound bus which has been converted into a true “classroom on wheels”, is rolling into the Birch Aquarium at Scripps from Noon-3pm on Saturday, August 6th! The bus travels on bio-diesel fuel, vegetable oil, and solar power. It’s being operated by 13 Dartmouth students, and is on a nationwide tour to promote sustainability. The bus is equipped with different sensors & tools designed to help visitors learn and experience just how to bus works. Take a look below at some fun facts about ‘The Big Green Bus’ & why you should bring the kids to come see it below.

FUN FACTS:
• The bus’ custom 260-gallon tank runs on waste vegetable oil, which the students pick up from restaurants and hotels along the way. The tank holds enough fuel to travel about 2,000 miles.
• The 13 students, ages 19-24, are sharing the tight quarters for three months.
• Four rooftop solar panels help power the onboard electronics, including an energy-efficient refrigerator that runs on only 40 watts (the average modern refrigerator runs on about 400 watts).

WHY:
The visit is tied to the aquarium’s newest exhibit, Boundless Energy, an outdoor, interactive playground that celebrates the innovative ways we can use natural forces to power our lives. The exhibit is designed to deepen visitors’ understanding of how renewable energy sources from the sun, the wind and ocean motion can be used to produce clean electricity.
