Have A Ball This Summer With KIDS BOWL FREE!

bowling_shoesOur kids LOVE bowling, and we plan to have a ball this summer with the Kids Bowl Free program! We went to our local bowling center a couple of weeks ago and saw a postcard reminding us about the program. We signed up for it last year, and thought it was great! We’re excited that we’ve recently collaborated with the Kids Bowl Free program to share details on how it works. As compensation, we’ve received a Family Pass, and will share how you can purchase one of your own.

KIDS BOWL FREE!

How It Works
Signing up for the Kids Bowl Free program is easy! Head over to KidsBowlFree.com, and click on the area of the map where you want to register your child(ren) for the program. A list of bowling centers will pop up. Click the bowling center of your choice. (There are a ton participating in Southern California!) The location you choose for the Kids Bowl Free program will then have a registration form for you to fill out for your child(ren). A list of dates and times available for the program should appear on the right side of the page as well. Fill out the registration, and you’ll start receiving e-mails on Sunday mornings once the program starts. The weekly coupons are good for two free games per day for your kids all summer long. Print the weekly Kids Bowl Free coupons and take them to the bowling center you chose at registration. It’s a great deal, and a good way to get the kids out and doing something active!

The Family Pass
kids_bowl_freeWant to bowl with your kids or grandchildren? If so, the Family Pass is a great way to get each of you having a ball! The Family Pass pricing begins at $24.95, and includes 2 games per person listed on the pass each day! You may include up to 4 adults on the Family Pass. The Family Pass may be purchased online at the time you register your kids for the Kids Bowl Free program, or at any time during the length of the program.

bowlingMore Program Details

• You must register each session in which you participate. If you signed up last year, you must register again this year to receive your free weekly coupons.
• You may sign up at more than one bowling alley, but you’ll need to use a different e-mail address for each location.

• Each bowling alley determines when the program starts and ends at their establishment, as well as the times available to participate in the program. Some start and end earlier than others, and some have more hours available for participating.

We’ve registered our kids for the program, and signed up for our Family Pass as well. The kids are already asking to go to our local bowling center to make use of their coupons! Perhaps we’ll see you there!

Creativity and Family Fun Within KidsWalk at ArtWalk San Diego!

kidswalkKidsWalk, at ArtWalk San Diego returns to Little Italy April 27th-28th, 2013. This is one of our favorite Springtime events, with FREE art related activities for kids by the likes of Birch Aquarium at Scripps, Living Coast Discovery Center, and The New Children’s Museum.

Be sure to click HERE for a full writeup from last year with location details, and helpful TIPS for attending. It’s a super fun event for the entire family. Perhaps we’ll see you there!

KidsWalk at ArtWalk San Diego ~ April 28th & 29th in Little Italy

kidswalkArtWalk has been one of my favorite Springtime events since it first started, many years ago. I’ve tried to attend every year, and have always enjoyed walking the streets of Little Italy, looking at assorted art from various artists. Once we had kids, I began taking them to ArtWalk as well.

A few years ago I discovered they had an area called KidsWalk, which is solely devoted to kids activities. KidsWalk is set up at Amici Park on Date Street & Union Streets, next to Walker Elementary. The area is set up with lots of tents from various affiliations, such as museums, art organizations, and local businesses.

Most tents have free art related activities for the kids. ArtReach, a local nonprofit associated with ArtWalk, has one such area. If you stop by KidsWalk at the right time, you might see the Sophia Isadora Academy of Circus Arts performing, which is something our kids always find amazing to watch. One of our favorite KidsWalk activities is to join in with a group of others playing instruments with RhythmWorx.

This year, Birch Aquarium, The New Children’s Museum, & Rare Hare Studio will have crafts to make out of recycled materials, Art with Larisse will have a tent showing basic drawing techniques, and San Diego Seaside Scrollers will offer wood projects, to name a few! Mission Federal Credit Union, ArtWalk’s title sponsor, will also be at KidsWalk, with savings banks for kids to paint.

I’ve found that if you have kids, and head straight to KidsWalk, walking around the remainder of ArtWalk is much more enjoyable. KidsWalk allows them to use some of their energy, and gives them the opportunity to use their own creative outlet. I suggest setting aside an hour to and hour and a half to spend at KidsWalk.

ArtWalk San Diego, including KidsWalk, is from 11am-6pm, April 29th & 30th, 2012. There’s lots to see and do, and the festival is free! Click HERE to go to learn more about KidsWalk. Perhaps we’ll see you there!

Sand Castle Snowman Is A True Work of Art!

sandcastlesnowmanToday we came across an incredible work of art, in the form of a sand castle snowman. While visiting the Hotel del Coronado, we saw a crowd gathering on the beach. Curious as to what there was to see, we walked across the sand, and saw the masterpiece. The details on this sand castle were incredible, and it was obvious the artist, otherwise known as The Sand Castle Man has a true passion for his work. Not only did he make and display his incredible art for all to enjoy, but he also played holiday music to go along with it, to make viewing the Sand Castle Snowman a true holiday experience.

If you want to see the Sand Castle Snowman for yourself, head over to beach with the beautiful white sand, directly across from the Hotel del Coronado. Who knows how long the masterpiece will hold up, but it’s already been there a week, so there’s a good chance The Sand Castle Man will take care to keep it together past Christmas. Perhaps we’ll see you there!

Chula Vista Nature Center FREE 10/15 for National Refuge Week!

cvncTo celebrate National Wildlife Refuge Week and encourage families to connect with nature, the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Chula Vista Nature Center will be hosting an event from 11am-4pm on Saturday, October 15 at Sweetwater Marsh with activities for the whole family! Track refuge animals and birds by using telemetry, identify their tracks and scat, and learn about their marsh habitats. Create a work of art and learn how to draw and paint with an art teacher. Dip a plankton net in San Diego Bay to see the intricate creatures that live in the sea… or plant native plants in the new butterfly garden.

Families will have FREE admission for the day into the Chula Vista Nature Center where they will be able to view the birds, fish and turtles that live in San Diego County up close, and touch a bat ray or a sea star in one of the Nature Center’s aquaria. In addition to nature arts and crafts, families enjoy an interactive story time and other fun presentations in the Nature Center auditorium. There will be a prize wheel to spin for all participants who complete the activities on the refuge trails.

Free parking for the event will be at the Nature Center parking lot at Bay Blvd. and E St., just west of Interstate 5 in Chula Vista. From there, visitors can ride the free shuttle bus into the refuge and Nature Center for all the festivities. Our kids LOVE taking the shuttle!

The Sweetwater Marsh Unit of the San Diego Bay National Wildlife Refuge is one of five refuges in the San Diego Refuge Complex and belongs to a nationwide network of federal lands – the National Wildlife Refuge System – dedicated to the protection of wildlife habitat and wildlife species. All of San Diego’s refuges were established to protect, conserve and restore the wildlife and habitats of southern California’s diverse coastal ecosystems, one of the most biologically diverse areas in the United States.

National Wildlife Refuges across the country will be holding events for National Wildlife Refuge Week. Refuges offer a variety of outdoor activities: environmental education, wildlife observation, wildlife photography, fishing, hunting and interpretive activities. There is at least one wildlife refuge in every state and one within an hour’s drive of most major cities. Please click HERE for more information about National Wildlife Refuges.

“The collaboration of member museums of the San Diego Museum Council allow us to create programs that bring us closer to residents and tourists,” said Danielle Susalla, Director of Exhibits and Communication at Oceanside Museum of Art and Marketing Committee Lead for San Diego Museum Council. “We’re expecting to see a bump in families heading to museums to check out a new or favorite exhibit.”

Research points to the role museums have in a child’s education making back-to-school season an ideal time for the Kids Free in October campaign. In fact, the California Association of Museums (CAM) and the American Association of Museums’ (AAM), Center for the Future of Museums recently published a discussion guide entitled “Tomorrow in the Golden State: Museums and the Future of California.” In the report, the relationship between museums and the education system is highlighted as students can gain valuable experiences by engaging with museums.

La Jolla Historical Society

Oceanside Museum of Art

Reuben H. Fleet Science Center
A favorite of the young and the young at heart, The Museum is renown for its kid-friendly, interactive exhibits such as Kid City. Kid City gives infants to preschoolers a way to experience the everyday wonders of the world by working, playing, and creating. Older children will enjoy the traveling exhibition, “Geometry Playground”, where they can can physically explore the mathematical branch through games and playing.

San Diego History Center and Museum
Kids can learn history in a way that is educational and fun at the San Diego History Center and Museum. The popular “History for Half Pints” series takes kids on a journey through history. October’s “History for Half Pints” on October 17, 2011 has a spooky Halloween theme where kids can dress up in their favorite Halloween costumes and read Halloween storybooks, make Halloween crafts and celebrate “National Cookie Month” with some Halloween cookies.

San Diego Model Railroad Museum
A longtime family favorite, children will be mesmerized by the intricate scaled-down setups of actual train routes, with trains cruising down tracks. The latest display is of the Tehachapi Pass, which is the 70-mile route through the Mojave Desert and Bakersfield.

Water Conservation Garden
Your kids can learn a thing or two about sustainability and home gardens at the Water Conservation Garden. They will love the beautiful open gardens and exhibitions. With their interactive composting exhibit, kids can learn different ways to compost and will especially love the worm composting exhibit. The vegetable garden is a great way to teach children, and adults, about growing healthy food and keeping a water wise garden. Other exhibits like the Children’s Discovery Trail and the Bird and Butterfly Garden will give kids a great day out in nature.
